On a train trip, sometimes you find your stomach rumbling but the bag of chips you packed isn’t satisfying your hunger. You have limited space so you can’t exactly¬†pack full healthy meals to eat on the way. We’ve compiled some healthy snacks that will help you stay full and healthy during your next train trip.

Healthy muffins

Muffins are a great snack but the pre-packaged or muffin mixes you buy have a lot of preservatives and don’t always keep you satisfied. Make a healthy¬†batch of muffins before your trip at home and store them in a cloth or plastic food bag. Combine oat flour, bananas, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, honey, olive or coconut oil, and any nuts, fruit, or chocolate you want. These muffins will have protein and healthy carbs to keep you full longer.

Trail mix

We all love a good trail mix and it’s easy to take on train trips or hikes. If you’re buying a pre-made mix, get one that’s full of dried fruits and other nuts besides peanuts. To make it at home, just buy whatever nuts, seeds, chocolate, and dried fruit you like and combine it all in a bag.

Peanut butter sandwich

Peanut butter has healthy fats to keep you full and keep your energy up. Make mini peanut butter sandwiches on whole wheat bread as a snack. Make sure to use natural peanut butter or the crunchy version. You can also take a small container of peanut butter to dip fruit or whole grain crackers in.

Popcorn is actually a very healthy snack if you air pop it beforehand or buy a bag of pre-made plain popcorn. You can spice it up, without the added fat from butter, by seasoning it with paprika, garlic powder, cracked pepper, or chili powder.

Kale Chips

They aren’t real chips, but roasted and seasoned kale. You can buy a pack at your local grocery store or make your own by baking kale in the oven for 10-15 minutes and adding olive oil and any seasonings you like on top.

For your next America By Rail train trip, try these healthy snacks so you don’t end up hungry or tired for each destination you explore.
